Disposing Waste

Waste Disposal - the quick reference:

Batteries - if you need to get rid of old batteries of any kind, first make sure to protect the terminals (usually individual plastic bags per cell) then request they be removed with an email to scc@me.gatech.edu. Do not bother to soak cells in salt water for discharging - simply bag them individually.

Tires - place dismounted tires on the concrete pad in front of the dyno room outside - this is only for tires used on SCC projects. The SCC will be charged for the disposal of these.

Used motor oil - all types of oils (motor, gear, tranny, etc) are to be disposed of in the 55 gallon drums marked "Used Motor Oil" under the roof behind the SCC. These drums must remain in place on the spill containment devices, and the cap must be replaced after you have dumped your oil. The spill containment devices are not there for you to dump oil in. This is for SCC

Waste Coolant Disposal Contact - david.stevenson@ehs.gatech.edu however this is no longer the case in a recent email with him. Submit your request through EHSA (https://ehs.gatech.edu/ehsa). If you do not have access to EHSA, please email EHSA@gatech.edu. Please attached waste labels to the drum(s) and they will get the drum removed.

Hazar
dous Material Removal: ehsa@gatech.edu is used for questions regarding the EHSA system (access, inventory, questions about particular waste request submitted via EHSA system and providing its #waste number, permits, inspections etc.); hazmat@gatech.edu is used for hazmat questions, regarding your waste, waste storage, how to handle particular waste etc. Waste requests are not submitted via email.

All waste pick-up requests must be submitted via our EHSA system (https://ehs.gatech.edu/ehsa ). Following the DOT and EPA regulations, all chemicals and waste must be barcoded or labeled, respectively. Lack of them violates state & federal regulations during a transport, processing and storing. We do not pick up any waste without EHSA labeling. In addition, this impacts our processing time severely. HazMat team serves ~1700 labs on our campus. Any disruptions and not following the best practice impact us and our research community. All your future waste pick-up requests need to be submitted via our EHSA system.

EHS and EHSA website lists the Help Guide - User Handbook, with step-by-step instructions with pictures of all EHSA features, including processing waste etc.; https://ehs.gatech.edu/ehsa-handbook.
